Introduction

Welcome to Sussex – with its 140 miles of coastline and acres of countryside, including the South Downs National Park, Sussex is home to more than 1.7 million people, the majority of whom receive good quality support, care and treatment most of the time.

Satisfaction rates among those using NHS services across the county are high and a lot of work has taken place in recent years to further improve health and care services.

However, while for many, this is a great place to live and work, this is not the case for everyone and there is still much that needs to improve – especially if we are to tackle the very real health inequalities that too many of our population experience: in East Sussex, there is an 11 year difference in life expectancy for men and almost 10 years for women, between those living in the most and least deprived areas. In West Sussex, the gap is 14 year for both men and women.

We have a growing population and we have an aging population, both of which mean that demands on our NHS are set to increase. In Sussex we know that for our services to be able to keep pace with the ever-growing demand, we need to work in partnership, across the NHS and beyond.

As part of our commitment to collaboration, NHS Sussex, University Hospitals Sussex and Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, have decided to work together on the recruitment of Non-Executive Directors to each of their Boards.

Each organisation has its own approach, culture and way of working and each has slightly different requirements from its NEDs, all of which you can learn more about in later pages of this micro site, but all three organisations are united in their vision of doing all that they can to improve the lives of local people by supporting them to live healthier for longer and by ensuring they have access to the best possible services when they need them.
