Job Summary
- To provide strategic leadership and management of South Tees Hospitals ‘Our Hospitals Charity’ (the Charity). The overall aim of the Charity is to assist South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) by providing additional resources to aid continual improvement in clinical performance and patient and staff experience in line with the Trust’s strategic aims and objectives. The post holder will undertake research, develop and implement innovative ideas and education to support the Charities strategic direction.. The Board of the Trust is the Corporate Trustee of the Charity.
- To advise and support the Corporate Trustee in developing and keeping up-to-date a strategy for the growth, development and sustainability of the Charity in the short, medium and long term; and to lead the implementation of that strategy.
- The Charity’s strategy will include a fundraising plan and cycle of business which will maximise the Charity’s impact over time and the contribution it is able to make to its beneficiaries and to improving the health of the populations served by the Trust.
- To develop effective and collaborative working relationships with the Corporate Trustee, Trust staff at all levels and other stakeholders (including, but not limited to, the Friends of the Friarage and other voluntary and public sector organisations in the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire).
- To effectively manage the Charity’s office and staff, ensuring they provide a proactive and responsive service to support and advise fund holders, fundraisers and the general public, resulting in the successful implementation of the Charity’s strategy.
- To manage all the charitable funds donated and raised for the benefit of Trust and ensure they are spent in accordance with the Charity’s objects and charity law.
Key Relationships
- The Head of Charities is accountable to the Corporate Trustee and its Chairman, while reporting to the Chief People Officer of the Trust.

Key Responsibilities
The post holder will:
- Work with the Corporate Trustee and its Chairman and the Charitable Funds Committee (a sub-committee of the Corporate Trustee) to ensure that the requirements of charity law and good governance are fully met (particularly in relation to fundraising and the use of charitable resources) and to promote the Charity’s brand, reputation and recognition within the Trust and in the wider community.
- Develop, implement and maintain the Charity’s Strategy, including its fundraising plan.
- Lead the Charity’s fundraising activities, working with colleagues and partners in the Trust and the voluntary sector, including the Friends of the Friarage.
- Lead the Charity team and oversee their fundraising and programme activities.
- As our charities and fundraising expert you will actively support colleagues to identify and create income generation opportunities in their own places of work and support them to act as ambassadors for the charity.
- You will also have responsibility for planning and implementing the charity's growth strategy and annual operational plans, with a focus on growing influence as well as income generation and appropriate expenditure.
- This role will plan and implement new ways of working with the executive, other directorates and departments, including estates, capital planning, People, and collaborative, adjusting and aligning the charity's strategies and plans with the organisation’s strategic and operational objectives and organising new opportunities for the effective and efficient use of charitable funds.
- Analysing information and making judgements on the best use of charitable resources to ensure legislation and best practice are adhered to and value for money is achieved.
- Regularly creating detailed reports of key performance data to share at Committee meetings and to meet National requests e.g. charitable funds, allocation of charitable resources.

The post holder will:

The post holder will:
- Be responsible for policy and service development that may impact Trust wide.
- Act as Information Governance lead (IA) within the charity as defined by the Information Commissioner's Office (and GDPR), and in relation to privacy and other donor-related matters as guided by the Fundraising Regulator.
- Engage with patients and carers as required, to support the development of the service.
The post holder will:
- Regularly carry out research and monitor best practice – within the NHS and globally – to inform the development of new approaches and plans, ensuring the charity is led by best practice in the charity sector.
- Ensure surveys, audits and stakeholder engagement activities are undertaken frequently to guide the charity’s plans and provide insights and data for the management of performance.
The post holder will:
- Monitor budget and income streams, providing expert advice on all income generation, voluntary fundraising and marketing issues, providing advice and guidance to senior colleagues and to the Corporate Trustees.
- Ensure a robust governance process is in place and provide regular assurance to te Board of Trustees.
- Ensure there are effective processes to direct and guide the charity's expenditure, ensuring teams to access and spend funds appropriately, enhancing the wellbeing and experience of staff, patients, carers and visitors, and supporting the delivery of the Trust’s strategic aims and ambitions. This will include leading the direction and management of any capital appeals.

Essential
- Best practice in strategy development, leadership and team building
- Best practice in fundraising and charity governance
- Charity law and governance
- Familiarity with online fundraising platforms.
- Senior fundraising experience within the charitable sector.
- Sound knowledge, understanding and practical experience of charity operations built up within a professional fundraising setting.
- Sound understanding of charity governance in general and fundraising in particular.
- Excellent knowledge of a broad range of modern fundraising and marketing disciplines.
Desirable
- An understanding of the national and local context in which healthcare is delivered in the UK.
- Experience of marketing Excellent negotiating skills.

- Educated to Masters level or equivalent experience at this level.
- High level of Specialist knowledge regarding fundraising and associated strategy.
