New Hospital Programme
It is an exciting time to join Frimley Health and be involved in a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform local healthcare in the area. The successful candidates will be involved in the development of a new Frimley Park Hospital.
The national new hospital programme was set up in 2020 to build new hospitals in England and is a joint venture between the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England.
As a transformation programme that aims to support the NHS to deliver healthcare suitable for the future, it has four main objectives:
- building national capacity
- achieving high quality and sustainable care
- creating intelligent hospitals
- delivering a better, faster, and sustainable legacy
The programme will transform how NHS healthcare infrastructure is built, including by standardising hospital design. Frimley Park Hospital was added to the new hospital programme in May 2023.
The new Frimley Park Hospital
Frimley Park Hospital reaches the half century mark this year, and what was considered state-of-the-art building in 1974, is now showing its age having exceeded its 30-year design life expectancy.
Like many other public buildings developed at that time, Frimley Park was built with a certain type of building material, known as Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) which makes up about 65% of the building structure.
So in May 2023 Frimley Park Hospital was added to the national New Hospital Programme, which will see us building a new state-of-the-art replacement hospital.
In the 2024 Autumn Budget, the Government confirmed that progress will continue at pace for hospitals affected by RAAC, including Frimley Park Hospital, meaning we were exempt from their national review of the New Hospital Programme. We continue to be actively supported by the national new hospital programme to maintain progress to ensure the new hospital will be open as soon as possible.
While we narrow down our preferred sites for the new hospital, we’re also embarking on an exciting journey to shape our overall clinical strategy and transform the way we deliver care – not just at Frimley Park Hospital, but across our entire local healthcare system. As we begin to explore new models of clinical care, we have a unique opportunity to rethink how we serve our patients and communities.
