Welcome from the Chief Executive
Thank you for your interest in becoming Chair of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This is a critical appointment at a defining moment in our journey and I'm pleased you are considering bringing your leadership to our Board.
Our Trust delivers mental health, learning disability, community health, offender health and forensic services across Nottinghamshire and beyond. Our care is delivered from more than 123 locations, ranging from community and acute settings to low, medium, and high secure environments, including within the prison estate.
We are also proud to host a number of regional and national specialist services, including the National High Secure Deaf Service, National High Secure Service for Women, the National High Secure Learning Disability Service for men and the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health, ensuring expert care is available to those who need it most, wherever they are in the country.
We care for people across all stages of life and in some of the most complex circumstances. At the heart of it all is our dedicated, skilled and compassionate colleagues who show incredible commitment every day to those we serve.
The past year has brought unprecedented challenge and scrutiny. Following concerns raised about the quality and safety of some of our services, the Secretary of State commissioned a Section 48 review under the Health and Social Care Act. We fully accepted its findings, published in three parts during 2024, and we are now focused on delivering the improvements expected of us – and which our patients and communities rightly deserve.
We also accepted in full the findings of the Independent Homicide Review into the tragic deaths in Nottingham in June 2023, following care provided to Valdo Calocane. Our thoughts remain with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by these horrific events. A statutory public inquiry has now been announced, and we will engage openly and transparently with that process.
These are difficult but necessary conversations for our organisation. They go to the heart of what it means to provide safe, person-centred, and accountable care. They are shaping the work we must do to rebuild trust, learn deeply, and deliver lasting change.
We are seeking a highly experienced, values-led leader who can bring strategic insight, robust governance, and inclusive leadership to our Trust. You will chair our unitary Board with confidence, working closely with executive and non-executive directors to shape a culture of improvement, compassion and openness.
While senior experience in health and care – particularly mental health, community, or forensic services – is highly valuable, we also welcome applications from candidates outside the NHS who can demonstrate strong governance acumen, outstanding leadership credentials, and a deep commitment to the values of the NHS.
At Nottinghamshire Healthcare, we are committed to being a pro-equity organisation. We want our leadership to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and to benefit from the lived experience, insight, and innovation that difference brings. We particularly welcome applications from people who are currently underrepresented at Board level, including those from racially-minoritised backgrounds, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, and those with lived experience of using our services.
This role will demand your time, focus, and resolve. But it is also a unique opportunity to help lead one of the most significant improvement journeys in the NHS today and to shape a Trust that listens, learns, and delivers the very best for those it cares for.
If you share our values and our ambition for change, I encourage you to apply. We look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
lfti Majid
