Our EHR Vision

We in Dorset are currently delivering one of our most significant digital transformation programmes: the implementation of a single, integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.

This initiative is designed to replace multiple legacy systems with a unified platform, providing a consistent and comprehensive digital record across our services. The EHR will support improved clinical workflows, more informed decision-making, and a safer, more coordinated patient experience. It also forms a core part of our wider digital strategy to modernise infrastructure and enable data-driven improvements in care quality and operational efficiency.

The programme is aligned with national objectives under the NHS England Frontline Digitisation agenda, which aims to accelerate the uptake of foundational technologies across provider organisations. As part of a broader strategy within the Dorset Integrated Care System (ICS), we are working towards platform convergence and greater interoperability across regional partners, including into Somerset. The Deputy CDIO (Acute) will contribute to both the delivery and strategic alignment of the EHR programme – helping ensure that clinical, technical, and operational perspectives are embedded throughout its design and rollout.

“Our EHR is much bigger than the technology – it represents a major transformation in the way we deliver care across Dorset and Somerset, with benefits in efficiency, safety, communication and experience for all staff, clinical and non-clinical”

– Louise Downey, UHD Chief Nursing Information Officer

Our Joint Vision

A unified electronic health record built on best practice guidelines that crosses the boundaries of health and care – initially covering acute, community and mental health with an ambition to include, in the longer term, primary and social care.

By joining together, we aim to meet the current and future challenges by providing a sustainable, high-quality healthcare service for our patients. To ensure we put patients and citizens at the centre, we ne need a unified HER that spans our care settings.

“Through our EHR programme, we have a once in a generation opportunity to make a real difference in how we deliver services for our people.”

– David Thomas, SFT Chief Nursing Information Officer
