A message from the Chair
Thank you for your interest in joining our Council
We are the independent regulator for more than 808,000 nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England. Working on behalf of the public, we want to support nursing and midwifery professionals to deliver the care we all want – safe, effective, and kind. This is an opportunity for you to play an important role in making a difference for people using health and social care services across the UK.
As Chair, I want the Council to reflect our society in all its diversity and be attuned to the needs of the communities we serve and the professionals we regulate. We are keen to hear from both lay people and professionals on our register with the right skills and expertise from diverse backgrounds, experience and walks of life.
Over the next three years, we are looking forward to developing our next Strategy and to government reforms which will transform how we work, giving us greater autonomy and flexibility to deliver more effectively for the public and professionals. This will include our Council changing to include Executive, as well as non- Executive, colleagues and becoming more accountable to the public and professionals.
We are looking for two high calibre, talented people:
- a professional currently on our register, who lives or works in Wales; and
- a financially qualified lay person with board/senior level audit experience and senior business/management experience who can chair our Audit Committee,
who can also bring strategic experience and can add value as the NMC keeps working hard to progress the fitness to practise caseload safely and create a supportive and inclusive working environment for everyone working in the NMC.
You will be joining a highly motivated, forward-thinking Council, united in our ambition to do our best for the public we serve and the professionals we regulate, in collaboration with our Executive team. Our values – to be fair, kind, collaborative, and ambitious – along with our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion – underpin everything we do.
If you share our values and have the qualities, passion, and commitment we need to contribute to our work, I hope you will want to join us.

Sir David Warren
